Reduction in Violence and Casualties

On Tuesday, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai announced a remarkable 88% decrease in violence attributed to left-wing extremism (LWE) compared to 2010. He highlighted that fatalities among civilians and security personnel have plummeted by 90%. Responding to a question from BJP MP Roopkumari Chaudhary, Rai noted that in 2025, there were 100 recorded deaths, a stark contrast to the 1,005 deaths reported in 2010. Furthermore, he revealed that security forces neutralized 364 Maoists, arrested 1,022, and assisted 2,337 in surrendering during the same year.

Statistics Reflecting Progress

The minister elaborated that incidents of violence linked to left-wing extremism fell from a peak of 1,936 in 2010 to just 234 in 2025, marking an 88% reduction. This significant decline in violence has directly contributed to the drop in casualties among civilians and security forces, which decreased from 1,005 in 2010 to 100 in 2025. In 2025, the number of police stations reporting incidents of violence was limited to 119, down from 465 in 2010, indicating a substantial improvement in the situation.

Current Status of Affected Areas

Rai pointed out that only eight districts are currently affected by left-wing extremism, with six located in Chhattisgarh, one in Jharkhand, and one in Odisha. This aligns with the government's objective to eradicate left-wing extremism from India by March 31, 2026. The Ministry of Home Affairs previously released its year-end review for 2025, revealing that over 300 left-wing extremists were neutralized due to extensive operations conducted in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and surrounding areas, marking the highest number in a single year.
