Significant Damage Reported at Iran's Supreme Leader Compound Following US-Israel Attack

Recent satellite imagery has shown extensive damage at the compound of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, following a significant US-Israel attack. The assault targeted key government symbols, resulting in explosions near Khamenei's office. While the US has increased military presence in the region, Iran has warned of potential retaliation against US bases. The current whereabouts of Khamenei remain uncertain, with reports suggesting he has been moved to a secure location. This article delves into the details of the attack and its implications for regional tensions.

Major Attack on Khamenei's Compound

Recent satellite images have unveiled severe destruction at the secure residence of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, located in Tehran. This damage follows a significant daylight assault conducted jointly by the US and Israel on February 28, 2026. Captured by Airbus Defence and Space, the imagery shows several buildings within the complex, which serves as Khamenei's residence and a venue for high-level meetings, in ruins. A thick plume of smoke was observed emanating from the site, situated in the heart of Tehran.

Witnesses reported that the initial explosion occurred close to Khamenei's office, prompting authorities to close off access to the area. Iranian state television acknowledged the explosion but did not elaborate on its cause. Reports indicate that the operation aimed at striking key government symbols, with missiles targeting regions adjacent to Khamenei's residential and office areas. This strike coincided with Israel's daylight offensive on Iran's capital, with smoke visible from various downtown locations.

In response to the situation, the United States has dispatched fighter jets and naval vessels to the area to exert pressure on Iran regarding its nuclear ambitions. A US official, along with another source familiar with the operation, confirmed that the US is involved in the broader military actions, although the specifics of its participation remain ambiguous.

US President Donald Trump has advocated for an agreement to restrict Iran's nuclear endeavors. However, Iran insists on its right to enrich uranium and has declined to negotiate on matters such as its long-range missile program and support for groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. Iran has cautioned that it may target US military bases and personnel in the region if it decides to retaliate. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz stated that the strike was executed to eliminate threats, but did not provide additional information.

Current Status of Ayatollah Khamenei

It remains uncertain whether the 86-year-old leader was present in his office during the explosion. Khamenei has not made a public appearance in several days amid rising tensions with the United States. According to recent reports, an Iranian official informed Reuters that Khamenei is not in Tehran at the moment and has been relocated to a 'secure location.' His precise status is still unknown.
