Major Updates for LPG Users

As May 2026 approaches, consumers of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in India are set to experience several significant changes. Amidst a global energy crisis and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, oil marketing companies are preparing to revise supply and delivery regulations.

What to Expect in May 2026:
1. Potential Price Adjustments

Starting May 1, 2026, a nationwide adjustment in LPG prices is anticipated. Since the onset of the Iran conflict, the cost of a 14.2 kg domestic cylinder has already increased by ₹60. Additionally, commercial cylinder prices (19 kg) have risen three times in the past month, with metro cities seeing a hike from ₹196 to ₹218 in April.

2. New Booking and Delivery Regulations

Lock-in Period: Currently, there is a mandatory 25-day interval between bookings for two cylinders. Companies may revise these rules in the near future.

OTP-Based Delivery: To enhance security and transparency, a system based on a 'Delivery Authentication Code' (DAC) may soon become a permanent requirement. Presently, 94% of deliveries utilize this method.

New Supply and Priority Framework
The government has assured that despite geopolitical tensions, 100% supply of domestic LPG, PNG, and CNG will be maintained. However, a priority list has been established for the commercial sector:

Top Priority: Hospitals and educational institutions.
Industrial Sector: Pharmaceuticals, steel, automobiles, and agriculture.
Migrant Workers: The supply of 5 kg FTL (Free Trade LPG) cylinders has been doubled.

Current Rules to Note
Booking Interval (Refill Gap)

Urban Areas: A 25-day interval for refill bookings.
Rural Areas: A 45-day interval for refill bookings.

Mandatory Biometric eKYC
For beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), Aadhaar-based authentication (eKYC) has become mandatory. Consumers who have not yet updated their biometric information are advised to do so promptly.

Transition from LPG to PNG
The government is encouraging commercial users in major cities to switch from LPG to PNG (Piped Natural Gas). If you have a PNG connection, you cannot obtain a new LPG connection. Current regulations also include specific guidelines for PNG consumers regarding the surrender of their LPG connections.
