Kolkata, June 11: Authorities recovered a staggering Rs 1.44 crore from a private English-medium school located in Kanchrapara, North 24 Parganas district, as reported by police on Thursday.

The discovery occurred following a search operation initiated at the school on Wednesday night, where the cash was found by 4:30 a.m. on Thursday. In addition to the money, a packet of condoms was also discovered in the school's 'sick room', according to police reports.

Two individuals have been taken into custody in connection with this incident.

After the new government assumed office in the state, Bijpur MLA Sudipta Das began compiling a 'data bank' of educational institutions within his constituency. Information regarding this particular school was relayed to him, prompting Das to visit the school at night and involve the police.

During the search, cash was uncovered, necessitating the use of a counting machine, which was brought to the school late at night. Due to the substantial amount of cash, additional counting machines were later introduced.

Das remarked, "Money was previously discovered at the residence of former state minister Partha Chatterjee. Now, cash has surfaced in this school. Allegations of irregularities have been made here, leading to today's discovery.”

The MLA further asserted, "This money does not belong to the school. It is illicit funds linked to Trinamool Congress leaders Kamal Adhikari, Subodh Adhikari, and Partha Bhowmik. It appears they concealed this cash in the school out of fear of ED and CBI investigations. The origins of this money are questionable."

Das claimed that Kamal, the former chairman of Kanchrapara Municipality, served as the president of the school's management committee. However, no official comments have been received from Kamal, Subodh, or Partha.

In contrast, school principal Bikash Chandra Pal asserted that the seized cash represented admission fees. He expressed ignorance regarding how the condoms ended up in the school's 'sick room'.

He stated, "The admission fees have been accumulating since around April and were meant to be deposited in the bank. The accounts department will manage the funds."

Police are currently investigating the origins of the recovered cash and the circumstances surrounding such a large sum being present at the school. Authorities believe clarity will emerge once the investigation report is released.

Following the cash recovery, the school cashier, Abhik Nath, and assistant accountant, Sayan Ghosh, were arrested after discrepancies were noted in their statements during questioning.

This incident follows a recent event where a suitcase filled with termite-infested money was found in the student union room at Surendranath College in Kolkata, alongside weapons and packets of contraceptives.
