Significant Candidate Withdrawals Impact Assam Assembly Elections
Key Withdrawals in Assam Assembly Elections
Guwahati, March 27: On the final day of candidate withdrawals for the Assam Assembly elections, a total of 67 candidates stepped back, with a notable exit being Aminul Islam from the National People's Party (NPP) in Mankachar. This decision follows his recent transition from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).
Islam's departure is particularly significant in Mankachar, where his recent political shift had garnered attention and was anticipated to affect voter behavior.
This withdrawal comes shortly after his notable political change.
Having resigned from the AIUDF, he joined the NPP and was subsequently announced as the party's candidate for Mankachar. His move was perceived as a strategy by the NPP to bolster its presence in lower Assam, especially in areas with a significant minority electorate.
However, his unexpected exit has now shifted the electoral landscape in Mankachar, which could influence vote consolidation and party strategies in the region.
As per election officials, 722 candidates remain in the race for the 126-member Assam Assembly after the withdrawal period ended. Initially, 815 candidates had submitted 1,389 nomination papers, with 789 being validated after scrutiny.
In addition to Islam, four candidates from the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) also withdrew: Kamal Singh Bey (Bokajan), Mandal Enghi (Howraghat), Gulson Bey (Diphu), and Anjoshi Terang (Haflong), along with one candidate from the Gondwana Ganatantra Party. The rest of the withdrawals were from Independent candidates.
With the candidate list finalized, several prominent leaders remain in the race, including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, and Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary.
Voting for the Assembly elections is set for April 9, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4.
