Arrest of Nida Khan

In a shocking development regarding the sexual harassment and alleged conversion case at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) BPO unit in Nashik, police have made a significant breakthrough. Nida Khan, a suspended employee who had been on the run for 25 days, was apprehended by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. Khan is accused of not only aiding the main perpetrators but also pressuring female employees to convert to another religion.

Last month, alarming allegations surfaced concerning a BPO unit associated with TCS in Nashik, where employees accused certain staff members of sexual harassment, mental abuse, and attempts at forced conversion. Following these complaints, police formed multiple teams and initiated a statewide search operation to locate Khan.

Allegations Against Nida Khan

Khan faces charges of hurting religious sentiments and allegedly assisting individuals accused of rape and sexual exploitation. Investigators have also claimed that she attempted to influence one of the complainants to convert to Islam and discouraged victims from filing complaints against the accused.

Legal Proceedings

Khan had previously filed for anticipatory bail in a Nashik court, but her plea was rejected earlier this month. During the hearing, the prosecution argued that custodial interrogation was essential due to the emergence of digital evidence, witness statements, and alleged connections extending beyond Nashik.

SIT Investigation Details

The SIT, investigating under the directives of the Nashik Police Commissioner, informed the court that Khan allegedly introduced a complainant to specific religious rituals, encouraged her to wear a hijab and burqa, and shared religious materials and mobile applications with her.

Expansion of Investigation

The prosecution further claimed that there was a plan to change the complainant's name, and co-accused allegedly seized essential documents related to the victim. The SIT also revealed that the investigation's scope has widened, now including potential links to Malegaon and even Malaysia, where job opportunities may have been used as a lure.

Search Operations

Police had previously conducted raids at locations suspected to be hiding places for Nida Khan, based on information obtained from her husband. However, these locations were found to be closed, and Khan's and some relatives' mobile phones were reportedly turned off.

Defense Arguments

Khan's lawyer had previously informed the court that she is pregnant and is residing in Mumbai seeking protection from arrest. The defense argued that there are no specific anti-conversion laws in Maharashtra and denied the allegations of forced conversion.

Background of the TCS Nashik Case

This controversy revolves around a BPO unit linked to TCS in Nashik, where several female employees have accused senior colleagues and team leaders of sexual harassment, molestation, religious persecution, and attempts at forced conversion over the past few years.

Nature of Allegations

The allegations made by women aged 18 to 25 include molestation, unwanted touching, lewd comments, stalking, sexual exploitation under the pretense of marriage, and repeated taunts regarding their personal lives and inability to bear children.

Some complainants have alleged that they were pressured to pray, encouraged to wear hijabs and burqas, and were force-fed non-vegetarian food; investigators claim these were attempts at conversion. The FIR also alleges that Hindu deities were insulted at the workplace, and derogatory comments were made about Hindu religious practices.

Further Accusations

One complainant alleged that accused employees attempted to coerce her into sexual relations through intimidation and manipulation, while another accused, Tausif Attar, allegedly promised marriage before engaging in sexual relations with a colleague.

Ongoing Investigations

According to police, at least nine FIRs have been filed against several employees, including Danish Sheikh, Tausif Attar, Raza Memon, Shahrukh Qureshi, Shafi Sheikh, Asif Ansari, and others. Nida Khan, initially identified as an HR officer but later recognized as a telecaller, has also been implicated.

So far, multiple arrests have been made, including employees and officials associated with the BPO unit. Those arrested include Danish Sheikh, Tausif Attar, Raza Memon, Shahrukh Qureshi, Shafi Sheikh, Asif Ansari, and Ashwin Chainani, who were linked to the POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) committee. Nida Khan was arrested on Thursday.

TCS Response

In light of the serious allegations, the SIT formed by Nashik police is investigating digital evidence, witness statements, and potential external connections from Malegaon and Malaysia.

Meanwhile, TCS has stated that it has not received any formal complaints related to the accused individuals through its internal ethics or POSH mechanisms. However, the company has established a monitoring committee to conduct an internal investigation into the allegations and has involved independent experts.
