Significant Archaeological Discoveries Unearthed at Kashashila Shiv Ashram
New Findings Illuminate Mayong's Rich History

Raha, Aug 11: Recent archaeological excavations at the Kashashila Shiv Ashram have unveiled new insights into the ancient history of Mayong.
The excavations, conducted in preparation for a new building at the shrine in Hatimuria village, revealed a semi-finished stone sculpture from the 7th-8th century and terracotta sculptures dating back to the 11th-12th centuries.
Dr Utpal Kumar Nath, who serves as the secretary of the Mayong Village Museum and Research Centre, emphasized the archaeological importance of these findings.
"We are thrilled and fortunate to have uncovered such important artefacts from this sacred ashram. Previous excavations in the area have also yielded significant finds," Nath remarked.
He noted that the newly discovered artefacts are now housed at the Mayong Village Museum and Research Centre.
Nath indicated that these discoveries reflect a culturally vibrant civilization in the region and hinted at the possibility of further archaeological finds.
These recent discoveries follow earlier findings of terracotta sculptures from the 12th-13th centuries at the same Shiva Ashram.
He reiterated the necessity for enhanced archaeological investigations in Mayong.
Nath expressed his appreciation to the ashram priests and local community members for their support in the recovery of these artefacts.
Experts suggest that organized excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the Assam State Archaeology Department could lead to the discovery of additional archaeological remains in the vicinity.
Mayong, located in the Morigaon district, is renowned for its connections to tantra, folklore, and traditional beliefs about magic. However, its archaeological findings reveal a much broader and older cultural narrative.
A comprehensive field survey conducted in 2020-21 aimed at documenting and mapping the archaeological landscape of the area identified a variety of remains, including polished stone tools, rock-cut sculptures from both early and late medieval periods, temple ruins, and sculptures linked to the Pala-Sena era.
The recent discoveries at Kachshila Hill have enriched this archaeological narrative and reinforced the call for scientific excavation and systematic preservation of Mayong's heritage.
