Understanding Kartik Month

In Hinduism, the month of Kartik is regarded as a sacred and spiritually significant time. This period is especially dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. According to religious beliefs, after a period of yoga nidra during Chaturmas, Lord Vishnu awakens in this month. Therefore, activities such as bathing, charity, lighting lamps, and performing rituals during Kartik are considered highly meritorious. Devotees engage in the worship of Lakshmi-Narayan with deep faith, adhering to religious customs and seeking spiritual growth and blessings.

Religious Importance of Lighting Lamps

The act of lighting lamps during Kartik holds significant religious value. It is believed that lighting a ghee lamp at a sacred river, pond, or even at the entrance of one's home during this month brings blessings from Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Particularly, lighting lamps in the evening is considered auspicious, and devotees often light lamps in temples as part of their worship.

Spiritual Practices and Donations

According to religious traditions, sleeping on the ground during Kartik is also deemed virtuous, fostering qualities like purity, restraint, and simplicity. However, if health issues or cold weather make this difficult, individuals may use a bed while keeping their health in mind. Additionally, the month emphasizes the importance of charity, where individuals can donate rice to those in need. It is believed that such acts maintain the favor of the moon and mitigate adverse effects related to lunar defects in one's horoscope.

Consuming jaggery daily during this month is also considered beneficial, along with the tradition of donating it. This practice is thought to yield spiritual rewards, although individuals should consider their health and dietary needs when consuming jaggery.

Tulsi Worship During Kartik

The scriptures highlight the significance of worshipping Tulsi during Kartik. Lighting a lamp with pure ghee near the Tulsi plant every morning and evening is regarded as auspicious. Devotees pray to the Tulsi plant, seeking prosperity and well-being from Lord Vishnu. Regular worship of Tulsi during this month is believed to create a positive and auspicious atmosphere in the home.

What to Avoid During Kartik Month

According to priests, there is a tradition of avoiding eggplant during Kartik, as it is believed to cause digestive issues. Some religious beliefs also consider its consumption inauspicious for progeny. However, these are traditional beliefs and should not be taken as scientifically validated facts.

Additionally, it is advised to refrain from consuming foods like urad dal, moong dal, peas, fish, garlic, and chickpeas during this month. The consumption of meat, alcohol, and other tamasic substances is also discouraged. Maintaining a sattvic diet, calming the mind, and following a disciplined routine are emphasized during this period.

Maintaining Positive Conduct

Religious traditions suggest avoiding the application of oil on the body during Kartik, except on the day of Narak Chaturdashi, when applying oil is permitted. On this day, bathing with oil is a common practice. Devotees follow these rules according to their family traditions and beliefs.

During Kartik, it is advised to stay away from anger, disputes, and negative thoughts. One should avoid harsh words, unnecessary arguments, and harboring ill will towards others. Additionally, adhering to celibacy and maintaining self-control in behavior is considered important. Following these guidelines is believed to help individuals focus more on spiritual practices, fostering peace and positivity in their minds.
