Siddaramaiah Declares He Will Not Contest Karnataka Assembly Elections in 2028

A significant development has emerged from Karnataka's political landscape. Siddaramaiah, the former Chief Minister and a prominent leader of the Congress party, has announced that he will not participate in the upcoming Karnataka Assembly elections scheduled for 2028. He cited his advancing age, health concerns, and the increasing corruption in politics as the primary reasons for his decision. Speaking at an event in Mandya, the 79-year-old leader emphasized that although he is stepping away from electoral politics, he will continue to engage with the public and advocate for their needs.

This announcement comes shortly after the Congress leadership appointed D.K. Shivakumar as the new Chief Minister, replacing Siddaramaiah.

Reflections on Political Journey

During his address in Mandya, Siddaramaiah acknowledged that constituents from the Varuna constituency expressed their desire for him to run in the 2028 elections. However, he has chosen not to pursue this path. He reflected on the previous election campaign, where he received financial support from the people of Varuna, which contributed to his victory, but noted that such circumstances have changed.

Siddaramaiah mentioned that at 79, he would be around 81 or 82 by the next assembly elections, and his health is not as robust as it once was, making it challenging for him to work with the same enthusiasm as before.

A Legacy of Integrity

He stated, "By 2028, I will be 82 years old, marking 50 years in my political career." He began his journey in politics in 1978 as a member of the Taluk Board, experiencing both victories and defeats. He expressed satisfaction in having remained true to his principles and not betraying his conscience.

Siddaramaiah also criticized the current state of politics, claiming it has become entirely corrupt, leaving no room for honest governance. This realization contributed to his decision not to contest future elections.

Commitment to Public Service

Concluding his remarks, he expressed gratitude for the support he has received from the people of Karnataka over the past five decades, stating, "The people have always regarded me as one of their own and guided me with affection. I owe them this debt, and thus, my future endeavors will remain dedicated to public service."

Siddaramaiah holds the record for being the longest-serving Chief Minister of Karnataka, a milestone he achieved earlier this year. He stepped down from his position in May following a leadership transition within the Congress party.

Congress Welcomes His Decision

After the Congress party's victory in the 2023 assembly elections, a power-sharing agreement was established between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, which was set for two and a half years. Although Siddaramaiah previously denied any such arrangement, the Congress leadership ultimately decided to replace him with Shivakumar.

The Congress party has welcomed Siddaramaiah's decision not to contest the 2028 elections, affirming that he will continue to guide the party.
