Gill's Stellar Performance

Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has lauded Indian captain Shubman Gill following his remarkable double century during India's unprecedented 406-run chase against the West Indies in the second ODI of their three-match series on Thursday.

In this match, Gill formed a formidable 255-run opening partnership with Rohit Sharma, setting a strong foundation for the ambitious run-chase.

Record-Breaking Innings

Following his impressive 208 runs in 149 balls against New Zealand in 2023, Gill achieved the fastest double century in ODI history, reaching the milestone in just 117 balls. His innings included 24 fours and seven sixes, finishing at an unbeaten 223 runs off 133 balls, boasting a strike rate exceeding 167. This score ranks as the third-highest in ODI history, trailing only Rohit Sharma's 264 and Martin Guptill's 237*.

Gill surpassed Ishan Kishan's previous record of a 126-ball double century against Bangladesh in 2022. With two double centuries to his name, he joins Rohit Sharma, who has three, as the only players with multiple double tons in ODIs.

Praise from Harbhajan Singh

In an interview, Harbhajan Singh expressed admiration for Shubman Gill's development as both a player and a captain, noting that his skills have improved significantly with experience. He acknowledged Gill's dedication and the pivotal role his father played in his journey, celebrating his record-setting double century.

"Shubman Gill is continuously elevating his game. As captain, he has shown remarkable consistency since his Under-19 days. His growth is commendable, and I believe his father's support has been instrumental in his success," Harbhajan remarked.

"The effort he has invested is evident in his performance. This double century is exceptional; no one has achieved 200 runs this quickly. Congratulations to Shubman and his father, who must be incredibly proud of his accomplishments," he added.

Additional Achievements for Captain Gill

Gill's achievement also makes him the second player after Glenn Maxwell to score an ODI double century while chasing, with Maxwell's 201 not out against Afghanistan in 2023 being the first. Gill's score also surpassed Maxwell's record for the highest individual score while chasing.

He is the first cricketer to hit a double century while captaining in both Tests and ODIs, having previously scored 269 against England in a Test match last year. Additionally, he broke Virender Sehwag's record of 219 runs against the West Indies in 2011, marking the highest ODI score by an Indian captain.

Gill reached his second consecutive century of the series and his third ODI century on home soil in just 62 balls, breaking Rohit Sharma's record for the fastest century by an Indian captain. Rohit had scored a century in 63 balls against Afghanistan during the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. The record for the fastest ODI century by an Indian remains with Virat Kohli, who achieved it in 52 balls against Australia in 2013. Gill also reached 150 runs in 89 balls, the fastest by an Indian in ODIs.

Gill's Impressive Statistics

In 11 ODIs this year, Gill has amassed 894 runs in 10 innings, averaging 127.71 with a strike rate of 119.51, including three centuries and five fifties.

Overall, in 69 ODIs and 68 innings, he has scored 3,712 runs at an average of 65.12 and a strike rate exceeding 103, with 11 centuries and 20 fifties.
