Shubman Gill to Captain India in ODI Series Against West Indies

The BCCI has unveiled India's squad for the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies, with Shubman Gill taking the lead as captain. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are included in the 15-member team, while Rishabh Pant continues to be absent from the ODI setup. The series, starting on September 27, will serve as a platform for player evaluation ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Newcomers Auqib Nabi and Naman Dhir have received their first call-ups, adding fresh talent to the squad. This article provides a detailed overview of the team and its dynamics.

India's Squad Announced for West Indies Series

On Wednesday, the Men's Selection Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed the squad for the upcoming home series against the West Indies. Rohit Sharma, who has faced retirement rumors following the tour of England, joins Virat Kohli in the 15-member ODI lineup. Shubman Gill will take the helm as captain, with KL Rahul serving as vice-captain.

Opportunity for Player Assessment

The series, set to commence on September 27, will allow India to evaluate various players as they gear up for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Pant's Ongoing Absence and Squad Changes

Rishabh Pant has been appointed captain of the Rest of India team for the upcoming Irani Cup. However, his absence from the ODI squad is significant, as he has not participated since November 2024. With Ishan Kishan unavailable due to the Asian Games, Dhruv Jurel has been selected as the second wicketkeeper alongside KL Rahul. As India prepares for Test series against New Zealand and Australia later this year, Pant does not seem to be a priority for the white-ball format at this time.

The squad also sees the return of Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Siraj. Jadeja was absent from the recent ODI series against England, while Siraj was rested during the England tour due to workload management. Jadeja's inclusion is crucial as the team looks ahead to the 2027 World Cup, while Axar Patel will participate in the Asian Games as part of India's T20 squad.

New Faces in the ODI Squad

The selectors have granted maiden ODI call-ups to Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi and Punjab all-rounder Naman Dhir. Their addition brings new talent to a squad that already includes Nitish Kumar Reddy, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Gurnoor Brar.
