Shubman Gill Discusses Challenges and Aspirations Ahead of IPL 2026 Final
Captain Shubman Gill on Venue Challenges
Shubman Gill, the captain of Gujarat Titans (GT), shared insights on the physical and mental hurdles of competing across various venues in quick succession, particularly before the IPL 2026 final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) scheduled for Sunday. In a pre-match press conference held on Saturday, Gill noted that reaching Dharamsala can be quite challenging. He emphasized, "While the opposing team may have a physical edge, the finals hinge on mental resilience. The team that is mentally prepared will emerge victorious."
T20 Aspirations and Continuous Improvement
Gill also spoke about his long-term goals in T20 cricket while managing his responsibilities in Tests and ODIs. He expressed, "I would be thrilled to be selected for the T20 squad. However, my primary focus is on enhancing my skills across all formats. Cricket is a game where perfection is elusive, but striving for improvement is essential, and that's my aim."
Commendation for Sai Sudharsan
The captain praised his teammate Sai Sudharsan for his impressive consistency and dedication on the field, identifying his strong work ethic as a significant asset. Gill remarked, "In a tournament like the IPL, maintaining the same level of intensity throughout matches can be challenging. This is one of Sai's greatest strengths. There are days when players may not feel mentally or physically prepared, yet he consistently rises to the occasion."
Record-Setting Opening Partnership
Gill and Sudharsan have formed one of the most successful opening partnerships in IPL history. Since teaming up in 2022, they have amassed 2,944 runs together, ranking just behind the iconic duo of AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli. Sudharsan, who secured the Orange Cap last season with 759 runs, continues to showcase his form this year, while Gill remains among the top run-scorers.
"Achieving the same intensity in every match and maintaining consistency in preparation is no easy feat. Sai excels in his routines and lifestyle outside cricket, which translates to his performance on the field," Gill added.
Praise for Bowling Strategy
Gill also commended the team's pace bowlers, Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj, for their outstanding performances in the current IPL season. He explained, "The strategy is straightforward. When bowling with the new ball, if the pitch offers assistance, the most challenging delivery for a batsman is a good length ball, which varies depending on the pitch conditions. Factors like soil type and grass presence influence this length significantly."
"The effectiveness of our bouncers has been exceptional. We utilized them strategically in every over, achieving a level of accuracy that I haven't witnessed in a T20 match before. The success rate of our bouncers was remarkable," he concluded.
