Shreyas Iyer's Transformation: Overcoming Short-Ball Struggles and Leading PBKS to Victory
Shreyas Iyer's Journey of Improvement
Captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS), Shreyas Iyer, has shared insights into how criticism regarding his performance against short-pitched deliveries spurred him to enhance his skills. He attributes his progress to a shift in mindset and dedicated practice.
Confronting the Short-Ball Challenge
In a recent interview on JioStar, Iyer reflected on how doubts about his ability to tackle short balls became a pivotal moment in his career. He stated, "People claimed I would never overcome my short-ball issues, which motivated me to prove them wrong through hard work."
Iyer elaborated on his evolved strategy, saying, "Previously, I would settle for singles or keep the ball down. Now, my approach is aggressive; if a short ball is in my range, I aim to hit it for six."
Enhanced Training Techniques
Iyer acknowledged the significant influence of his mentor Pravin Amre and batting coach Abhishek Nayar in refining his batting technique. He emphasized the value of realistic practice sessions, stating, "During my training, I aim to play around 50 overs and face over 300 balls to identify what works best for me."
He also highlighted the benefits of facing actual bowlers rather than relying solely on sidearm throwdowns, which has sharpened his clarity and movement at the crease. "The more bowlers I face, the more fluid my movements become. I focus on establishing a rhythm," he explained.
The Fighter's Mindset
Iyer discussed his relentless determination to silence critics, saying, "I often hear people say that something is impossible. I refuse to accept that. As a top-level cricketer, I feel compelled to prove them wrong. My mindset shifts to: 'How can I come back stronger from this situation?'"
He added, "This drive is particularly strong after injuries. When I suffered a back injury, some doubted I would return to form. I challenged myself with the question, 'Why can't I?' The way you frame your mindset post-injury is crucial; you decide what to focus on and what to disregard."
PBKS's Record-Breaking Performance in IPL 2026
In the current IPL 2026 season, Iyer's PBKS has achieved an impressive sixth consecutive victory. They accomplished the highest successful run chase in T20 history by defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, successfully chasing a record target of 265 runs with seven balls remaining.
This victory leaves PBKS unbeaten with six wins and one no result, accumulating 13 points. They also surpassed their previous record of chasing down 262 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2024 season.
Next, Punjab will face off against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on April 28.
