Iyer, who recently excelled in the IPL, is set to lead the team in upcoming matches against Ireland and England. Discover more about this significant transition in Indian cricket.

Leadership Transition in Indian Cricket

Ajit Agarkar, the Chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) Senior Men's Selection Committee, announced a significant change in the T20I captaincy. Suryakumar Yadav has been replaced as captain and excluded from the squad for the upcoming series against Ireland and England. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the new T20I captain, despite Suryakumar's recent success in leading India to victory in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup earlier this year. Tilak Varma has been named as Iyer's vice-captain.

'A Tough Decision': Agarkar Discusses the Change

During the press conference for the squad announcement, Agarkar expressed that the decision to replace Suryakumar was challenging, especially considering his leadership during the World Cup. He emphasized that the selection committee evaluated various factors, including player form and the team's future trajectory. Agarkar stated that appointing Shreyas as captain was deemed the best choice for the team's progress.

Evaluating Form and Future Direction

Although Suryakumar led India to the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 title, his batting performance was underwhelming, with only 242 runs in nine matches. In the IPL 2026 season, he scored 270 runs, contributing to the Mumbai Indians' disappointing ninth-place finish. Agarkar acknowledged Suryakumar's past successes but stressed the importance of planning for the future. He noted that while IPL performance was not the only consideration, Iyer's strong batting form made the decision to change leadership easier.

Iyer's Return and Upcoming Matches

Shreyas Iyer, who last played an international T20I against Australia in December 2023, is making a comeback after an impressive IPL 2026 season where he scored 498 runs for Punjab Kings. India's next T20I series will be against Ireland, featuring two matches before they head to England for five T20Is and three ODIs. The first T20I against Ireland is set for June 26, followed by the second on June 28.
