Shreyas Iyer Reflects on India's T20I Defeat Against New Zealand
Analysis of India's Performance
Hamilton [New Zealand], November 1: Following a seven-wicket loss to New Zealand in the fifth and final T20I at Seddon Park, India's T20I captain Shreyas Iyer acknowledged that the team could have performed better. He noted that despite a promising start with a partnership alongside Ishan Kishan, the team faltered by losing consecutive wickets during the middle overs, which increased pressure on the new batsmen. Iyer stated, "We had a good start, but losing wickets in quick succession put us under pressure."
Pitch Challenges Faced
Iyer highlighted the difficulties posed by the pitch, mentioning that the ball was seaming and occasionally skidding. He remarked on how both he and Tilak Varma fell victim to similar dismissals while trying to adapt to the challenging conditions. "It was tough to bat on, especially with the ball seaming and sometimes skidding through. We both got out in similar ways, which shows how challenging it was," he explained.
Opportunities for Improvement
The captain also pointed out areas for improvement in India's bowling and fielding, viewing the match as a learning experience from playing in foreign conditions. "We could have been sharper in our bowling and fielding. It was a bit sloppy, but it’s a great learning opportunity. Playing in New Zealand presents different challenges, and we need to learn from them," he added.
Future Focus and Strategy
When asked about using the last two matches for experimentation, Iyer mentioned that the first three games helped establish a rhythm, while the final matches were a chance to test the team's limits. "The first three games helped us find our rhythm, and the last two were about experimenting and challenging ourselves. We didn’t meet that challenge today, but it was a valuable learning experience," he noted.
Looking ahead, Iyer emphasized the need to focus on upcoming ODI matches and identified fielding as a critical area for improvement. "Right now, we need to concentrate on the ODIs. The boys are in good spirits, and we need to tackle the challenges that come with playing overseas. We missed an opportunity today, but we will work on our fielding, which is an area that needs attention," he stated.
Gratitude to Supporters
Iyer expressed his gratitude to the Indian fans in New Zealand for their unwavering support throughout the series. "The turnout and support from our fans gave us a lot of confidence. Their encouragement means a lot to us, and we hope to continue receiving it in future matches," he said.
In the final T20I, New Zealand successfully chased down India's target of 192 runs in 18 overs, winning the match by seven wickets. Tim Seifert scored an impressive 93 runs off 50 balls, while Glenn Phillips contributed an unbeaten 65 runs off 38 deliveries. Despite the loss, India secured the five-match series with a 3-2 victory.
