Shreyas Iyer Prepares for England T20I Series After Ireland Setback
Iyer Discusses Balancing Opportunities and Security
As India gears up for the first T20I against England, captain Shreyas Iyer emphasized the importance of balancing opportunities for players while ensuring senior members feel secure. He reflected on the disappointing 0-2 series loss to Ireland, describing it as 'depressing'.
Following this unexpected setback, the Indian team, led by Iyer, is set to face England in a five-match series starting Tuesday at Chester-le-Street.
In a press conference, Iyer acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating, 'This is a great opportunity, and it will be challenging. The last series didn’t go as planned, but everyone is in a positive mindset. We are looking forward to an intense game, and maintaining calm under pressure will be beneficial for us.'
Learning from the Ireland Series
Iyer described the loss to Ireland not as 'embarrassing' but rather 'depressing', noting that the hosts had a strategic advantage regarding the ground dimensions. He expressed confidence that the Indian team is now better prepared for the conditions in England.
'We didn’t expect Ireland to perform so well. They outplayed us in every aspect, and we fell short in our analysis of the ground and pitch conditions. Kudos to them for their performance; we learned a lot from that series,' Iyer remarked.
He added that the upcoming England series represents a 'completely new chapter', with several players familiar with the conditions.
Iyer's Personal Form and Sooryavanshi's Potential Debut
Despite scoring only 3 and 10 in the Ireland T20Is, Iyer remains confident in his batting abilities, trusting his instincts and noting his good timing in practice sessions.
'I believe in my instincts and know how well I perform under pressure. I want to maintain that faith as we move into the upcoming matches,' he stated.
Regarding the much-anticipated debut of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Iyer remained tight-lipped about the team's decisions, saying, 'Our hands are tied in terms of what we can disclose. This is a private matter we discuss within the team.' He praised Sooryavanshi as a 'brilliant prodigy' who will excel when given the chance.
