Shreyanka Patil Faces Injury Setback Ahead of Women's T20 World Cup
Patil's Ankle Injury
Shreyanka Patil, India's off-spinner all-rounder, is expected to miss upcoming matches in the Women's T20 World Cup due to an ankle ligament injury.
The injury occurred during a match against the Netherlands on Wednesday, leading to immediate medical attention. Patil was carried off the field in Leeds just after her first delivery, having twisted her ankle while pursuing a ball towards mid-on. She was seen in considerable discomfort, unable to bear weight on her right leg, prompting the team physiotherapist to call for a stretcher, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
Replacement Considerations by BCCI
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not yet confirmed a replacement for Patil. However, several players from the India A women's team, currently in England, are under consideration. This squad, captained by Anushka Sharma, features off-spinner Minnu Mani, left-arm spinners Tanuja Kanwar and Vaishnavi Sharma, leg-spinner Prema Rawat, and Anushka herself, who also bowls off-spin. Any of these players could potentially be called up for the World Cup.
Patil's Injury History
This injury marks yet another challenge in Patil's career, which has been plagued by injuries. Previously, she suffered a broken finger in July 2024, sidelining her from that year's T20 World Cup. She also dealt with shin splints in both legs and a stress reaction in her wrist, which kept her out of action for nearly a year. Patil made her return during the Women's CPL 2025 and later contributed to Royal Challengers Bengaluru's title-winning campaign in WPL 2026.
India's Victory Against Netherlands
In a remarkable display, India triumphed over the Netherlands by 95 runs in their ICC Women's T20 World Cup match held in Leeds on Wednesday. This victory propelled India to the top of Group A with four points.
Batting first, India achieved their highest-ever T20 World Cup score of 209/5, thanks to an outstanding opening partnership between Smriti Mandhana (74 runs off 47 balls) and Shafali Verma (55 runs off 38 balls). The pair added 115 runs for the first wicket, setting a solid foundation, while Richa Ghosh (20*), Harmanpreet Kaur (12), and Deepti Sharma (10*) ensured a strong finish during the death overs.
In response, the Netherlands began their innings steadily but suffered a dramatic collapse, going from 96/4 to 114 all out in just 17.3 overs. Shree Charani was the standout bowler, taking 4 wickets for 19 runs, while Shafali Verma (3/20) and Nandini Sharma (2/22) also contributed significantly as India's bowlers dismantled the lower order.
The match showcased a complete team effort, with India's top-order batting and disciplined bowling leading to a decisive victory.
