Incident Overview

A 44-year-old shopkeeper was attacked by a mob close to Delhi University's North Campus on Wednesday, following accusations of selling cow meat, as reported by local authorities.

The police received a report from a 15-year-old boy who alleged that cow meat was being sold at a grocery store in Vijay Nagar, located in the Model Town area.

The boy claimed he had bought meat from the establishment named 'North East Store,' owned by Chaman Kumar, a resident of Burari in North Delhi.

According to the police, a group of individuals confronted the shopkeeper based on suspicions regarding the meat's origin. He has since received medical treatment, and a medical examination is currently in progress.

Authorities also mentioned that samples of the meat have been collected and dispatched for forensic testing to ascertain whether it is indeed cow meat.

Footage circulating on social media depicts the mob chanting threats against those who kill cows.

The Students’ Federation of India, affiliated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist), released a video alleging that the mob, targeting the shopkeeper from the North East, was also making threats against students from minority backgrounds.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Bhisham Singh stated that the situation has been stabilized. He assured that once the forensic analysis and thorough investigation are completed, necessary legal actions will be initiated based on the findings.
