President Trump was inside the White House during the incident but was unharmed. This event raises concerns about security measures in the vicinity of the White House.

Shooting Incident Overview

Recent images have surfaced showing bullet impacts on the window of the White House History Shop following a shooting that occurred on Saturday evening. This tragic event resulted in the death of the gunman and left a bystander in critical condition. The incident unfolded shortly after 6 PM local time near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just a short distance from the White House, as reported by the United States Secret Service.

According to a statement from the Secret Service, officers engaged a man who opened fire at a security checkpoint. The suspect was subsequently transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Sources familiar with the situation identified the shooter as Nasire Best, a 21-year-old individual. He was taken to George Washington University Hospital before passing away.

During the shooting, a bystander was also injured, though it remains uncertain if the injuries were caused by the suspect's gunfire or that of the responding officers. A law enforcement source indicated that the victim, described as a young male, underwent surgery and is in serious condition. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among Secret Service personnel. At the time of the incident, US President Donald Trump was inside the White House but was reported to be unharmed.

In a post on social media shortly after midnight on Sunday, Trump expressed gratitude towards the Secret Service and law enforcement for their swift response. He noted that the suspect had a "violent history and possible obsession" with the White House. The president also referenced a previous shooting linked to the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures in Washington.

Sources revealed that Best had prior interactions with the Secret Service over the summer and had been instructed to avoid the White House grounds due to mental health concerns. The Secret Service stated that preliminary investigations suggest the individual drew a weapon from his bag and began firing at the officers on duty.

The investigation is ongoing, with journalists at the White House reporting multiple gunshots and being advised to take shelter in the press briefing room while the area was secured by Secret Service agents. Video footage captured by Selina Wang of ABC News documented over two dozen gunshots. Kash Patel, the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, confirmed on social media that FBI agents were assisting the Secret Service in the response. The Metropolitan Police Department is also involved in the investigation, collaborating with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. This incident follows a recent attempted assassination plot against Trump during the annual White House Correspondents' Association Dinner.
