A recent report reveals a concerning statistic: over 1.61 lakh water samples were found contaminated out of nearly 64 lakh tested across India in 2025-26. The Minister of State for Jal Shakti, V Somanna, provided these figures in the Rajya Sabha, highlighting the ongoing challenges in ensuring safe drinking water. The Jal Jeevan Mission aims to address these issues, but the responsibility largely falls on state and UT governments. An online portal has been developed to facilitate water quality testing and reporting, while a 'Citizen Corner' feature aims to enhance public awareness about water safety. Contamination Concerns in Drinking Water

New Delhi: A staggering 1.61 lakh water samples were identified as contaminated out of nearly 64 lakh tested nationwide during the 2025-26 period, as reported to the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

In a written statement, V Somanna, the Minister of State for Jal Shakti, revealed that over 59 lakh samples were analyzed in the year 2023-24, with more than 82 lakh samples examined in 2024-25 by drinking water quality testing laboratories.

For the year 2025-2026, a total of 63.96 lakh samples were tested, with 1.61 lakh showing contamination, according to the information provided to the House.

As of March 2, 2026, states and Union Territories (UTs) reported testing more than 63 lakh samples in laboratories dedicated to drinking water quality.

The minister highlighted the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) Har Ghar Jal, initiated in August 2019, which aims to ensure a reliable supply of safe drinking water to rural households in collaboration with states and UTs.

He emphasized that the responsibility for planning, designing, and maintaining drinking water supply schemes, including those under JJM, rests with state and UT governments, while the central government offers technical and financial support.

To assist states and UTs in testing water quality, an online JJM-Water Quality Management Information System portal has been established for sample collection, reporting, monitoring, and surveillance.

Additionally, a 'Citizen Corner' feature on the JJM dashboard provides village-level water quality test results, making this information publicly accessible to enhance awareness and trust in the quality of piped water supply in rural regions.
