Trial of Rohan Rane Begins in Paris

Paris: A 29-year-old Indian national, Rohan Rane, is currently facing trial in France for allegedly leading an online group that manipulated underage girls into engaging in sexual activities and self-harm, according to various media sources.

The proceedings commenced on Monday in a Parisian special criminal court and are being conducted privately, as reported by the state-run France 24.

Rane, who initially moved to France for business studies in Antibes and later became a fitness trainer, was apprehended in 2021. He is charged with several serious offenses, including acts of torture against minors, organized extortion, and the distribution of child sexual abuse material.

The trial is expected to last until Friday, and if found guilty, Rane could face a life sentence.

The investigation into Rane's activities began in November 2020, following a report from the US National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding online content involving a 12-year-old girl.

Authorities revealed that Rane was part of an online community called CVLT on Discord, which allegedly promoted neo-Nazi, racist, and anti-Semitic ideologies while targeting vulnerable teenage girls.

The group reportedly engaged in sextortion, coercing victims into sending nude images and threatening to release them or use other intimidation tactics, leading some to perform sexual acts or harm themselves.

Approximately 100 victims from various countries, including the United States, the UK, Denmark, Australia, Canada, Estonia, and the Netherlands, have been identified in this case.

Five women from the US, aged between 18 and 21, have joined the case as civil parties and are anticipated to provide testimony via video link during the trial.

Due to concerns raised by US authorities about potential intimidation of victims and witnesses, as well as threats made against US prosecutors, the Paris court has mandated that the trial be held behind closed doors.
