Pregnancy Discovery at Kandhamal School

A disturbing case has emerged from a government-run residential girls' high school in Kandhamal district, where a Class X tribal student has been discovered to be pregnant. This alarming situation has led to a formal complaint and an ongoing investigation by local authorities.

The incident was reported at the Rangaparu Government Residential Girls’ High School, situated in the Belghar panchayat of Tumudibandh block. School officials noted that the student returned to the hostel on June 25 after the summer break.

Shortly after her return, staff members observed signs of illness and grew concerned when the girl refused to accept sanitary pads during their distribution.

The school matron, along with an auxiliary nurse midwife, alerted the headmaster on Friday, who then contacted the girl's family. Together, they took her to the Baliguda sub-divisional hospital for a medical assessment.

Medical professionals confirmed the pregnancy, prompting the school management to file a written complaint at the Tumudibandh police station on Saturday.

A case (85/2025) has been officially registered, and an investigation is currently underway. Officer-in-Charge Ashutosh Jena of Tumudibandh PS confirmed the filing of the case, indicating that initial findings suggest the pregnancy may have occurred while the girl was in her village during the summer vacation.

According to police sources, the student has admitted to being in a relationship with a local boy, who is suspected to be involved.

Headmaster Lingaraj Sahu noted that concerns arose when the student declined sanitary pads distributed to all girls towards the end of June. The responsible staff reported the situation, and following directives from higher authorities, the student underwent examination in the presence of her parents before police were notified.

The police are continuing their investigation based on the survivor's statement, with further actions planned after identifying and questioning the alleged perpetrator.
