Allegations Surface Against Teacher
Sundargarh: A 36-year-old Sanskrit teacher at a government school in Sundargarh district, Odisha, has been accused of sexually harassing seven female students, as reported by local authorities on Friday.
The headmistress of the school filed a formal complaint at the Gurundia police station on August 20, following the emergence of these serious allegations.
In response to the complaint, law enforcement has initiated a case against the teacher, citing multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 74 (assault or criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 75 (sexual harassment), and 351 (2) [criminal intimidation]. Additionally, charges under the POCSO Act, specifically sections 8 (sexual assault) and 12 (sexual harassment), have also been applied, according to a police officer.
The headmistress claims that the incidents of harassment occurred on August 16 within the school premises.
After consulting with senior officials, she proceeded to file the complaint on August 20, leading to the immediate registration of the case, police confirmed.
Statements from the affected students have been documented under Section 180 of the BNSS, and a request has been made to the magistrate to record their statements under Section 183 of the BNSS, as stated by Rameswar Singh, the inspector in charge of Gurundia police station.
Once the magistrate's order is received, the statements will be officially recorded, and subsequent actions will be determined.
Currently, the accused teacher is reported to be evading authorities, and efforts are underway to locate him, Singh added.
