Shoaib Akhtar Critiques Pakistan's ODI Performance Against West Indies
Shoaib Akhtar's Strong Reaction to Pakistan's ODI Defeat
Former Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar expressed his disappointment regarding the team's crushing loss in the third ODI against the West Indies, held at Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad on August 13.
Pakistan faced a staggering defeat by 202 runs, marking their first series loss to the West Indies in 34 years. Chasing a target of 295 runs, the Pakistani batting lineup faltered dramatically, getting all out for just 92 runs in 29.2 overs. Jayden Seales was instrumental in this defeat, taking six wickets, including the first four of the top order, which left Pakistan struggling at 23 for 4 and set the stage for a decisive West Indies victory.
Seales' remarkable bowling performance included figures of 6 wickets for 18 runs at an economy rate of 2.50 over 7.2 overs, leading the West Indies to a historic ODI series win over Pakistan.
Akhtar's Insights on Team Dynamics
Reflecting on the series loss, Akhtar noted that the current team seems overly reliant on individual performances, contrasting this with past teams that thrived on collective effort. He stated, "We used to have expressive and explosive talent, and we played like that. We were never dependent on one individual; everyone contributed. No one sought escape routes."
He emphasized that the current mindset has shifted over the last decade, with players focusing on personal averages rather than team success. "The intent should be to win matches for your country," he added.
Call for a Shift in Batting Approach
Akhtar urged for a transformation in Pakistan's batting strategy to align with modern cricket standards. He remarked, "We need to change the intent, the mindset, and create that atmosphere. You need to play according to modern cricket. How hard is that to understand?"
Pakistan has faced criticism for their outdated cricketing style, which was evident in their inability to chase down a modest target of 120 runs during last year's T20 World Cup. Additionally, they failed to secure a win in any match during the 2025 Champions Trophy, despite being the host nation.
Overseas Performance Concerns
Despite winning the ODI series against the West Indies, Pakistan's struggles in overseas conditions remain a significant concern, as highlighted by their recent T20I series loss in Bangladesh and a white-ball series defeat to New Zealand.
Akhtar pointed out that the Pakistani batters struggle with moving balls, stating, "The ball moves a bit, and they are in trouble. You can’t carry Pindi pitches everywhere."
This batting collapse comes just ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to start on September 9. Although the tournament will feature T20 matches and Pakistan recently won a T20I series against the West Indies, this defeat raises serious questions about their form, confidence, and ability to perform under pressure in crucial tournaments.
