Shiromani Akali Dal Urges Immediate Implementation of Women's Reservation Bill

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) convened a meeting of its senior leaders on Saturday, where they called for the prompt enactment of the Women's Reservation Bill. Following the meeting, SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal took to social media to express that the party draws inspiration from the teachings of Sikh Gurus, who advocated for the respect, equality, and rights of women. He noted that the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has already set a precedent by providing reservation for women in its assembly.

 

Badal emphasized that after extensive discussions on significant issues in Parliament, SAD is also advocating for a fair and just delimitation process to ensure equal representation for all states. He mentioned that the party supported a proposal presented by the government to increase the number of seats in the House by 50 percent for all states. In his post, Badal stressed that both the women's reservation and the delimitation process should be expedited.

 

The government is currently attempting to pass a constitutional amendment bill during the ongoing monsoon session, which aims to implement 33 percent reservation for women in assemblies by 2029 and increase the number of Lok Sabha seats to 816. This bill had failed to pass in the previous session. SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema commented that he could not disclose much about the meeting but highlighted the decisions made, particularly regarding the implementation of the Women's Reservation Bill and the formula for increasing the number of seats by 50 percent. He added that the SAD president is open to meeting with the Prime Minister on any matter concerning the broader interests of Punjab.
