Shimron Hetmyer Joins West Indies Squad for ODIs Against New Zealand
Hetmyer Steps In for Injured Greaves
Shimron Hetmyer has been included in the West Indies team for the upcoming second and third ODIs against New Zealand, taking the place of the injured Justin Greaves. Greaves suffered a back injury that prevented him from participating in the first ODI held in Providence and has since returned to Barbados for rehabilitation, as confirmed by Cricket West Indies.
Hetmyer's Journey Back to the Team
Hetmyer, who last played an ODI in June 2025, was called back for the three-match series against Sri Lanka earlier this year but did not get a chance to play. Initially, he was left out of the squad for the first three ODIs against New Zealand to fulfill his commitments with the Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket (MLC), according to ESPNcricinfo.
The Seattle Orcas finished fifth in the MLC league stage, missing out on the playoffs, which allowed Hetmyer to rejoin the West Indies team. During the tournament, he scored 164 runs across 10 matches with a strike rate of 136.66.
Justin Greaves' Injury Update
Cricket West Indies has stated that Greaves will undergo reassessment before the final two ODIs against New Zealand and the following two-Test series against Pakistan. The all-rounder recently had a standout Test series against Sri Lanka, where he achieved a career-high score of 180 in the drawn second Test and was named Player of the Series, contributing to West Indies' first Test series win since 2023.
