Umiam (Meghalaya), May 6: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced on Wednesday that the Central Government has approved the expansion of the runway at Shillong airport, which he believes will significantly enhance tourism and connectivity in the region.
During the Empowerment of Tourism Champions of Meghalaya event held at Orchid Lake in Umiam, Sangma stated that the expansion is projected to be completed in approximately 15 months, allowing for the operation of larger aircraft.
He emphasized, "This will transform tourism in Meghalaya," highlighting the importance of improved connectivity in establishing the state as a premier tourist destination, attracting visitors from both India and abroad.
The event, organized by the tourism department, gathered various stakeholders including entrepreneurs, artisans, students, community leaders, and beneficiaries from across the state.
Sangma pointed out that the success of tourism relies on collaboration among all stakeholders, stating, "Tourism cannot thrive through government efforts alone or through isolated actions of hotel owners, taxi operators, or restaurant owners. It flourishes when everyone contributes to the ecosystem."
He regarded the event as a pivotal moment in Meghalaya's tourism development, commending the tourism department and stakeholders for their contributions in positioning the state on the national and global tourism map.
Stressing the government's long-term vision, Sangma remarked that tourism extends beyond organizing events or building hotels; it involves creating a comprehensive ecosystem that entices travelers to choose Meghalaya.
"When families decide on travel destinations, Meghalaya should be prominent, appealing, and a natural choice," he asserted.
The chief minister noted that tourists consider factors such as infrastructure, connectivity, safety, comfort, and overall experience when selecting destinations.
"Our aim is straightforward: every tourist visiting Meghalaya should depart with unforgettable memories," he added.
Outlining the state's tourism roadmap, Sangma mentioned several ongoing major projects, including the Shillong Ropeway, Mawkdok Skywalk, Rain Museum in Mawsynram, Living Root Bridge Museum, and tourism centers in Sohra, Mandalgre, and Siju.
Tourism Minister Timothy D Shira highlighted that tourism has become a vital component of Meghalaya's economy, with preliminary figures indicating nearly 1.8 million tourist arrivals in 2025.
"When tourism was prioritized, the vision was to make it a key driver of economic growth and a significant source of livelihood for the people," he stated.
Shira noted that over 150 tourism projects are currently underway across the state, with investments amounting to thousands of crores and increasing involvement from the private sector.
He added that Meghalaya is working towards establishing Umiam as a global tourism hub and has set up a dedicated Destination Management Organisation for effective destination planning and sustainable tourism management.
