Tharoor Critiques US Treasury Secretary's Remarks

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has subtly criticized US Treasury Secretary Scott Basset for his remarks suggesting that India is taking a somewhat stubborn approach in trade discussions with the United States.

Tharoor emphasized that adopting a firm stance is far preferable to being passive or compliant in the face of injustice.

In response to a question regarding the completion of tariffs and trade agreements by the end of October, Basset described India as 'aspirational.'

During an interview with a media channel on Tuesday, Basset stated, 'I believe we are in a good position. There are significant trade agreements that remain unresolved, and in that context, Switzerland is still in the mix, while India is showing a somewhat stubborn attitude. The US Trade Representative Jamison Greer and his legal team are busy preparing documents on all these matters.'

Tharoor took to social media platform 'X' to express, 'I have heard some individuals accusing India of being stubborn. I assert that it is better to be firm than to remain silent or submissive in the face of injustice.'

As trade negotiations between India and the US were ongoing, former President Trump imposed a total tariff of 50 percent on India, which includes an additional 25 percent tariff on the purchase of Russian oil. This tariff is set to take effect from August 27. India has labeled this move as unfair and unreasonable.
