Tharoor's Response to Violence in Bangladesh

On Thursday, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed his condemnation of the murder of Deepu Chandra Das in Bangladesh. He noted that while protests occur in India, they do not escalate into chaos. Tharoor emphasized that any attempts at violence in India would be met with strict police action, which is necessary. His comments came in light of the unrest following the assassination of anti-India radical student leader Sharif Usman Hadi in Bangladesh. Speaking to a news agency, Tharoor urged the interim government led by Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus to take action to restore order, as it is their responsibility. He stated that elections cannot be held in an atmosphere of 'chaos and fear,' highlighting that voters in Bangladesh feel unsafe.

Upcoming Elections and Protests

Voting for parliamentary elections in Bangladesh is scheduled for February 12. Tharoor remarked that given the unstable situation across the border, it is not surprising that some groups in India might organize counter-protests. He affirmed that in a democracy, such actions are their right, and he has not observed these protests spiraling out of control. He reiterated, "There has been no violence, no lynching, and any attempts at violence will be met with strict police action, as it should be. We hope Bangladesh will respond similarly."

Comments on Sheikh Hasina

When asked about the ousted Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, Tharoor stated that India has shown 'the right humanitarian spirit' by not sending back someone who has been a good friend of New Delhi for many years. He suggested that India should allow Hasina to remain safely until the government can further assess the situation. Hasina's government fell after significant student protests last August, prompting her to flee to India, where she has been residing since.

Concerns Over Illegal Immigration

Regarding the issue of Bangladeshi and Rohingya migrants, Tharoor asserted that the government has the right to deport those residing illegally in India. However, he criticized the central government for lacking better control over the borders. He stated, "If illegal migrants are entering our country, isn't that a failure on our part? Shouldn't we maintain better control at our borders?"
