New Leadership at CBFC

On Wednesday, the central government announced the appointment of Shashi Shekhar Vempati as the new chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). He will succeed Prasoon Joshi, who has recently taken on the role of chairman of Prasar Bharati. Joshi served as the head of CBFC for over eight years. Vempati, an alumnus of IIT Bombay, is recognized for his contributions to the media and technology sectors. He is also a co-founder of AI4India, an organization aimed at broadening access to artificial intelligence tools across the nation.

Role and Responsibilities of CBFC

The CBFC operates under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and is tasked with certifying films for public exhibition in India. According to the Cinematograph Act of 1952, the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules of 1983, and guidelines issued by the central government under Section 5(B), films can only be released in theaters or other public venues after obtaining certification from the board.

Structure of the CBFC

Headquartered in Mumbai, the board comprises a chairperson and several non-government members appointed by the central government. It has nine regional offices located in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad, New Delhi, Cuttack, and Guwahati. These offices are supported by advisory committees made up of members from diverse backgrounds, who are appointed for specific terms. The certification process is conducted in accordance with the rules and guidelines established by the government.
