On Wednesday, Sharad Pawar, the president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), expressed his disapproval regarding the comparison of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Jawaharlal Nehru. He emphasized that the sacrifices and contributions of India's first Prime Minister towards nation-building should not be overlooked.

While addressing the 27th foundation day event of the NCP, Pawar noted that Modi has become the longest-serving Prime Minister, creating an image that no leader can match. He stated, "The contributions of Nehru in nation-building and the freedom struggle cannot be forgotten and deserve respect."

Historical Context of Nehru's Contributions

The former Union Minister remarked, "Nehru cannot be compared to anyone else. He spent many years in prison during the freedom struggle under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi."

Pawar acknowledged Modi's record as the longest-elected Prime Minister, saying, "This is commendable. The position of Prime Minister in a parliamentary democracy is constitutional and should be respected. However, Nehru is Nehru, and Indians will not forget his sacrifices."

Response to Controversial Statements

Maharashtra Minister and BJP leader Girish Mahajan had previously accused Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi of atrocities against Sikhs. Pawar strongly condemned Mahajan's remarks, stating, "Such statements are unacceptable."

He added, "Operation Blue Star was a sacrifice by Indira Gandhi. Sikhs have worked on the borders for the country's security and food security. Some individuals chose a different path. Certain events cannot be forgotten. Indira Gandhi never compromised on the country's dignity and security."

Political Fallout from Mahajan's Comments

Mahajan's declaration of Operation Blue Star as a 'black day' and his comparison of the 1984 military action to the attacks by Afghan ruler Ahmad Shah Durrani has sparked political controversy.

Opposition parties have reacted sharply to Mahajan's statements, demanding his removal from office. The BJP leader labeled Operation Blue Star as a 'military attack' on a sacred site of the Sikh community, alleging that the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi forcibly sent the army into Punjab and that holy premises.
