In a video shared on social media by The Australia Today, Watson conveyed his gratitude for being part of India's 80th Independence Day festivities. He emphasized the profound connection he has with the nation and its cricket enthusiasts, whose unwavering support has significantly influenced his career. 'Participating in events like this is always special for me. Celebrating India's 80th Independence Day reminds me of the incredible impact the Indian public has had on my life and career, something I never take for granted,' Watson stated.

Long-standing Ties with Indian Cricket

Watson's relationship with India extends beyond his international cricket career from 2002 to 2016. He has also played extensively in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for teams like Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Chennai Super Kings. Currently, he holds the position of Assistant Coach for Kolkata Knight Riders.

Watson described India as a place where he feels more welcomed and supported by fans compared to Australia. He attributed this strong connection to the introduction of the IPL in 2008, which coincided with some of his best performances. 'It genuinely feels like a second home. 'Growing up in Australia, barbecues were the norm, but in India, the vegetarian food is delicious and varied. I find myself enjoying vegetarian meals there, which is quite different from what I experience back home,' he added.
