Sham Eagles Crowned Champions in Ice Hockey League Season 3
Sham Eagles Triumph in Women's Ice Hockey League
The Ice Hockey League's third season concluded with Sham Eagles claiming the women's championship title after an impressive tournament performance. Captain Semzes Dolma shared insights into her journey in ice hockey, her evolution into a leadership role, and the increasing prominence of women's ice hockey in Ladakh.
The tournament, which took place from January to February, showcased teams from various regions including Leh, Nubra, Changthang, and Kargil. The competitive spirit was evident, culminating in the Humane Warriors and Sham Eagles winning the men's and women's titles, respectively. Shakar Chiktan Queens finished as the runners-up in the women's category.
A Captain's Journey
Reflecting on her beginnings in ice hockey, Semzes remarked, "I was drawn to ice hockey as it was an integral part of winter life in Ladakh. Initially, it was about having fun with friends and seniors. However, as I began participating in more competitive events, I recognized the weight of representing my team."
"Leadership developed gradually through consistent training, supporting my teammates, and maintaining composure during challenging situations. Over the years, younger players began to look up to me. As captain, my responsibilities extend beyond scoring; I aim to keep the team united and focused," she added.
Managing Pressure in Critical Moments
Discussing her performance in the semi-final and final, Semzes stated, "Knockout matches inherently come with pressure, especially for a captain. I try to avoid the mindset of needing to score; my role encompasses more than that. I must ensure the team remains organized, communicate effectively, and foster confidence among players."
"Before crucial matches, I concentrate on fundamentals like positioning and discipline. My hat-trick in the semi-final was a result of our team's synergy, not just individual talent. Scoring early in the final boosted our confidence, but I reminded everyone to maintain balance, as momentum can shift rapidly in high-stakes games. While I feel the pressure, I view it as a responsibility that encourages me to remain calm, allowing the team to do the same."
The Impact of the New Round-Robin Format
Semzes discussed the newly introduced round-robin format, stating, "This format made the competition more equitable and challenging. Previously, a couple of games could determine outcomes, but now every team faced each other, necessitating consistency throughout the tournament."
"It also enabled us to identify weaknesses early on. After competing against a team, we could analyze our performance and make necessary adjustments for subsequent matches. This improved our communication and tactical understanding significantly."
"Regular competition is crucial for women's teams. Facing diverse opponents with varying strengths accelerates growth. The Ice Hockey League is fostering an environment where every match feels significant, rather than casual."
Significance of Winning the Title
On what winning the championship meant to her, Semzes expressed, "This title symbolizes the culmination of persistent effort over several months. As captain, I carry the team's emotions. When we won, I reflected on all the early practices, injuries, and challenging training sessions in freezing conditions."
"This victory is particularly meaningful as the league has successfully completed multiple seasons. Consistency builds belief among players, knowing that this platform will continue to exist. Winning is gratifying because it confirms the strength and structure of the competition."
"Lifting the trophy as captain was not merely about one season; it represented progress for our team and for women's ice hockey in Ladakh."
The Growth of Women's Ice Hockey in Ladakh
Semzes highlighted the increasing participation of women in ice hockey, stating, "One significant change is the commitment level. More girls are not only trying the sport but are also dedicated to it. They train regularly, enhance their fitness, and take their roles within the team seriously."
"Another vital shift is the community's support for the sport. The attendance of over 4,000 fans at a women's final sends a powerful message, demonstrating that people are watching, supporting, and celebrating women's ice hockey. This environment boosts players' confidence, making them feel their efforts are valued."
"Families are becoming more supportive as they witness the enthusiasm surrounding the games. Ice hockey has evolved from a seasonal activity to an anticipated event. Observing younger girls in the audience asking about training and positions fills me with hope. It indicates they aspire to participate, not just watch. If this community support persists, I believe women's ice hockey will continue to flourish naturally."
