Shakib Al Hasan's Return to Bangladesh

Shakib Al Hasan has expressed his desire to come back to Bangladesh, emphasizing the need for assurances of 'normal security' prior to his return. The former captain of the national team has been living abroad since May 2024 due to ongoing legal and political issues.

His circumstances shifted significantly after the Awami League government was removed from power on August 5 of the previous year. Shakib, who had been a Member of Parliament for the party, found himself implicated in an FIR related to a murder case, even though he was not in the country at that time.

Facing Legal Challenges

In an interview with a news outlet, Shakib expressed his commitment to confronting the allegations against him. He stated, 'I will return, attend court, and contest the cases. There is no issue. However, they must guarantee my safety.' He clarified that his definition of security pertains to protection from harassment during the legal proceedings, rather than any special treatment or escorts.

The all-rounder also spoke about various allegations, including stock market manipulation, investigations by the Anti-Corruption Commission, and cheque-bounce cases. He refuted the rumors, pointing out that the investigations have been ongoing for nearly two years without any substantial evidence.

Concerns Over Frozen Assets

'My bank account has been frozen, which prevents me from engaging in certain activities. The authorities may have deemed it necessary to freeze my account for investigative purposes. However, this investigation has been ongoing for a year and a half, and no evidence has emerged so far,' Shakib remarked.

He affirmed his readiness to face trial if any evidence is found. 'If I am proven guilty, then appropriate actions should be taken. Conversely, if the investigation yields no results, I should be cleared and released,' he stated.

Uncertainty Surrounding His Return

Despite his faith in the legal system, Shakib admitted to feeling uncertain about returning home. He acknowledged the possibility of arrest but remains hopeful. 'Nothing feels out of the ordinary anymore,' he noted, reflecting the unpredictability of his current situation.

Shakib's last international match was during the Kanpur Test against India, following games against Pakistan. His prolonged absence from Bangladesh has fueled speculation, but his recent statements indicate he is gearing up for a legal battle once he receives security assurances.
