SGPC's Resolution and Allegations Against CM Mann
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) passed a resolution on Saturday calling for an FIR against Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the police officials responsible for preparing a forensic report related to a controversial viral video. Following a general house meeting, SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami announced the decision, stating that the committee has decided to file a complaint against Mann. He is accused of hurting religious sentiments, committing sacrilege, misusing his constitutional position, manipulating evidence using government resources, and concealing facts in the viral video case. Dhami mentioned that they will meet with the Punjab DGP regarding this matter. The SGPC took this step as they have not received a satisfactory response from the Chief Minister regarding the controversy.
Public Outcry and Social Boycott Demands
This development comes amid demands for a social boycott of Chief Minister Mann, with posters appearing in various locations across Punjab, including Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Bathinda, and Amritsar. These posters reference an order issued by Sikh religious leaders from Akal Takht on June 15, declaring Mann as a "Guru Drohi" (enemy of the Guru) and anti-Khalsa due to the controversial video. Earlier this year, in January, Mann was summoned by Akal Takht for allegedly making inappropriate comments about the Guru's donation box in the video and engaging in objectionable activities alongside images of Sikh Gurus and slain militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Posters have been placed in several areas of Hoshiarpur, including near Gurdwara Hariyan Walan on Hoshiarpur-Chandigarh Road, near Chhabewal bus stop, in front of Gurdwara Shaheedan Ladhewali in Mahilpur, Tuto Majra village, the old bus stand in Mahilpur, and Gurdwara Garna Sahib in Dasuha.
Akal Takht's Directive and Mann's Response
On June 15, Akal Takht Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Garghaj instructed members of the Sikh community to sever ties with Mann. In response to the posters placed outside gurdwaras, Mann questioned the SGPC, stating that boards have been erected urging people to boycott him, citing orders from Sri Akal Takht Sahib. He emphasized that he and the global Sikh community fully respect the supreme authority of Sri Akal Takht Sahib. Mann also raised a query about why similar boards were not placed against former Akali leader Sukhbir Singh Badal when he was declared "Tankhaiya" (guilty of religious misconduct).
