She emphasizes the importance of maintaining their creative instincts while providing a structured environment for consistent performance. With the season opener against Ranchi Royals on December 28, the team aims to improve upon last season's performance and compete for the title. Gierts believes that with the right support, these young athletes have the potential to excel in the sport.
 

Coach Gierts Celebrates 'Fearless' Young Players

Sofie Gierts, the head coach of SG Pipers, has expressed her admiration for the fearless nature and skill of the young Indian players in her team. She highlighted their innate talent and positive mindset as significant advantages during the initial training sessions. Gierts noted the impressive confidence and instinctive gameplay of emerging stars like Ishika and Sunelita Toppo, who have quickly made their mark with their dynamic playing style, according to a press release from the Hockey India League (HIL).


Encouraging Creativity Alongside Structure

Having represented Belgium internationally for over ten years and being one of the few women to coach a men's team at a high level, Sofie believes that Indian players contribute a unique flair to the sport. She stated, "There is a spontaneity and creativity in their hockey that should be preserved. Our goal is to provide a framework that allows them to consistently execute those creative plays at the highest level."


Looking Ahead: Season Goals and Aspirations

As the SG Pipers gear up for the upcoming season, the coaching staff aims to combine youthful enthusiasm with seasoned international experience. The team is set to kick off its season against Ranchi Royals on December 28, featuring a robust lineup of Indian talents, international players, and Olympic medalists. After finishing last in the previous HIL season with only one victory in six matches, the SG Pipers are determined to compete for the title in the revamped HIL starting December 28.
