Severe Weather Alerts Issued for Delhi-NCR and Western UP Amidst Heat Relief
Severe Weather Alerts in Delhi-NCR
Millions of mobile phone users in Delhi-NCR and parts of western Uttar Pradesh received an "extremely severe warning" as thunderstorms, rain, and strong winds swept through the area, providing relief from the oppressive heat experienced over the past few days. Emergency alerts, issued in both Hindi and English, appeared on mobile screens accompanied by loud sounds, indicating the possibility of adverse weather conditions within the next three hours. The alerts warned of thunderstorms with lightning, moderate to heavy rainfall, hail, and winds reaching speeds of 60-80 km/h, with gusts potentially hitting 90 km/h.
Details of the Weather Warning
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued this warning, stating that the inclement weather could affect several districts in western Uttar Pradesh, including Aligarh, Bagpat, Bulandshahr, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Ghaziabad, Hapur, Mathura, and Meerut. Residents were advised to stay indoors during the adverse weather and avoid open areas. The IMD noted that the storm system could lead to moderate to heavy rainfall and hail, raising concerns about potential damage to crops, trees, temporary structures, and electrical infrastructure. Authorities also warned of disruptions due to low visibility, flooding, and strong winds. People were urged to avoid taking shelter under trees, stay away from power lines and flooded areas, secure loose items outside, and postpone non-essential travel until conditions improved. This warning comes amid unstable pre-monsoon weather in northern and central India, where recent heat waves have transformed into dust storms, thunderstorms, and widespread rainfall. Meteorologists indicated that such weather systems could intensify rapidly, leading to sudden temperature drops, reduced visibility, and localized flooding in vulnerable areas. The storm activity is expected to provide temporary relief from the extreme heat that has gripped the region in recent weeks.
Government's Broadcast Warning System
This initiative aims to establish a faster, more effective, and robust emergency communication network for citizens across the country. It has been implemented by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The system was first launched on May 2, when India conducted a nationwide test of its indigenous cell broadcast system. Designed to deliver immediate, location-specific disaster warnings directly to mobile phones, users received alert messages in English, Hindi, and various regional languages, provided their devices had the test warning channel activated. Officials clarified that these notifications were part of a system test and did not indicate any real emergency situation.
