Guwahati, May 25: The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has issued a weather alert, cautioning residents about the likelihood of severe thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall in the Darrang and Kamrup Metropolitan districts within the next three hours.
The advisory from ASDMA indicates that both districts can expect heavy rain and thundershowers, with rainfall rates of 1 to 2 cm per hour, raising concerns about potential waterlogging, decreased visibility, and disruptions in low-lying areas.
"Residents are advised to remain indoors and take necessary precautions," the authority stated in a message shared on its official social media platforms.
Recent rainfall data shows moderate precipitation in Kamrup Metropolitan since May 24, with Hangrabari recording the highest at 19.5 mm in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Monday. Gauhati University and Guwahati city reported 6.5 mm and 6 mm, respectively.
The extended forecast does not provide much relief, as the latest warnings for Assam and Meghalaya predict extremely heavy rainfall on Monday, followed by very heavy rain on May 26 and 27.
Thunderstorms, lightning, and squally weather are anticipated to persist until May 29, with heavy rainfall expected to continue through May 31.
In a separate advisory for public safety, ASDMA has urged residents in Dibrugarh to avoid the banks of the Brahmaputra River due to a continuous rise in water levels.
The authority emphasized that the swelling river poses significant risks to individuals living near or traveling through riverbank areas, urging the public to stay alert and exercise caution.
With intermittent heavy showers and thunderstorms predicted across various districts in the coming days, authorities have encouraged residents to stay updated with official announcements and avoid unnecessary exposure to the weather until conditions improve.
