Severe Waterlogging Hits Delhi Following Heavy Rains and Thunderstorms
Impact of Heavy Rains in Delhi
Delhi: Significant waterlogging has been observed across various regions of Delhi after intense rainfall and thunderstorms swept through the national capital early on Sunday. Areas such as Moti Bagh, Minto Road, and the vicinity of Delhi Airport Terminal 1 have been notably affected. Footage from Minto Road illustrates a vehicle submerged due to the severe flooding caused by the downpour.
In addition to Delhi, the heavy rain and thunderstorms also impacted parts of Jhajjar in Haryana.
On Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for Delhi and surrounding regions, warning residents of strong thunderstorms, rainfall, and high winds expected over the next few hours.
This alert is part of a Nowcast warning based on the prevailing weather conditions. The IMD indicated that a thunderstorm cell is moving towards Delhi and nearby areas from the west/northwest. As a result, severe thunderstorms or dust-raising winds, along with frequent lightning and gusty winds (with speeds reaching 40-60 km/h or more), are anticipated to affect parts of the city within the next one to two hours.
The weather agency has advised residents to take necessary precautions. The IMD has recommended avoiding open areas and not seeking shelter under trees. Citizens are also urged to steer clear of weak walls or unstable structures and to stay away from water bodies.
Potential impacts from the thunderstorm include uprooted trees and broken branches. Crops such as bananas and papayas may experience moderate damage, and dry tree limbs could fall due to the strong winds. Dust storms might also occur in certain areas of the city.
Authorities have called on the public to remain vigilant and take all necessary safety measures.
Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, a cloud mass moved into North Delhi and progressed south-southeast, triggering a dust storm and strong winds.
The winds reached speeds of 50-60 km/h, with gusts up to 70 km/h, accompanied by light rainfall in the evening.
Power outages were reported in several parts of the capital following a severe dust storm, which was succeeded by thunderstorms, hail, and rain affecting various areas of Delhi.
