Heavy Rainfall Leads to Flooding in Uttarakhand

Dehradun, Sep 2: Intense rainfall in Uttarakhand has resulted in overflowing rivers and streams, significantly impacting daily life across various regions.


The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted extremely heavy rainfall on Wednesday, along with thunderstorms and lightning in multiple districts over the coming days.


Due to the state's hilly landscape, the heavy rains pose an increased risk of landslides, falling debris, waterlogging, and road disruptions in susceptible areas.


In Rishikesh, the Bin River is currently flowing at a high level, while the Gaula River in Haldwani has also seen a notable increase in its water level. Haldwani recorded 192 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours leading up to Tuesday, underscoring the severity of the downpour.


Additionally, the Shipra River near Kainchi Dham astonished onlookers as it transformed from its usual calm state to a raging torrent following continuous rainfall. The river, which typically flows gently outside the temple, appeared fierce and overwhelming on Tuesday.


The Shipra River, which begins in Bhawali and merges with the Kosi River at Garampani Khairna, swelled significantly due to the relentless rain since Monday night. Despite the heavy downpour, the number of devotees visiting Kainchi Dham was notably low on Tuesday, leaving the area in front of the temple relatively deserted.


Fortunately, the temple's protective wall and the bridge's supporting pillars remained undamaged, and no harm to the temple was reported. Regular religious activities continued without interruption.


In Nainital district, water from the Kakariya drain began to flood residential areas behind Pandeychhod village in Alchauna, causing significant challenges for local residents. By afternoon, the drain's flow had intensified, affecting nearly two dozen homes.


The local administration, in collaboration with villagers, initiated evacuation efforts for the impacted residents, relocating their belongings to safer areas. As the stormwater from the drain continued to rise, many homes became increasingly at risk, prompting residents to move their possessions to safety.


Families affected by the flooding have reported substantial losses. In response, the administration issued evacuation notices to 23 families in the area, advising them to relocate to safer locations.


Meanwhile, ongoing rainfall has also disrupted daily life in Chamoli district, with blocked roads and swollen Alaknanda and Pindar rivers due to the persistent rain.


The rising water levels of the Pindar River have raised alarms among residents living nearby. Footage from the Karnaprayag area shows the river's turbulent waters dangerously close to homes, hotels, and other structures along the banks.


As the river continues to swell, anxiety among residents has heightened. Authorities have repeatedly urged those living along the riverbanks to stay vigilant, exercise caution, and evacuate to safer areas when necessary.


Officials have cautioned that ongoing rainfall could lead to rapid increases in river and stream levels, advising residents to steer clear of swollen water bodies. The administration is actively monitoring vulnerable areas and encouraging adherence to safety guidelines.


Residents are urged to avoid high-risk locations and remain alert to potential landslides, flooding, and other rain-related emergencies.
