Impact of Heavy Rainfall in Uttar Pradesh

In the last days of September, heavy rainfall in Uttar Pradesh has significantly disrupted daily life across various regions. Reports indicate that between September 25 and 27, at least 81 individuals lost their lives, and 62 others sustained injuries due to incidents related to the storms and rainfall. Additionally, approximately 2,254 homes have suffered damage, according to the latest situation report from the state's relief commissioner.

Rainfall Levels Exceeding Normal Averages

According to the relief commissioner’s office, an average of 66.5 mm of rainfall was recorded in Uttar Pradesh from September 25 to the morning of September 27, a stark contrast to the normal average of 7.6 mm for this period. This represents an increase of nearly 775%. Out of the 75 districts in the state, 56 experienced excessive rainfall.

In Farrukhabad, rainfall was recorded at an astonishing 7,385% above normal levels, with other districts such as Kannauj, Shahjahanpur, Hamirpur, and Mahoba also experiencing significantly higher rainfall.

Fatalities Reported in Various Districts

Data from the relief commissioner’s office reveals that Sitapur recorded the highest number of fatalities, with 7 deaths reported. Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich, and Balrampur each reported 5 deaths, while Ayodhya, Maharajganj, and Gorakhpur saw 4 fatalities each.

The heavy rains and winds have led to incidents such as fallen trees, damage to makeshift homes, and flooding. The administration has deployed rescue teams in the affected areas.

Damage to Homes and Ongoing Assessments

The continuous rainfall has resulted in damage to 2,254 homes across the state. Authorities have been instructed to closely monitor vulnerable structures and areas prone to flooding. If necessary, families residing in unsafe homes will be relocated to safer locations.

Assessments of crop damage due to the rainfall are currently underway, and assistance for affected farmers is being initiated as per regulations.

Increased Vigilance in Border Districts

The impact of the heavy rainfall is not confined to Uttar Pradesh alone. Concerns are rising regarding increased water levels in rivers in Nepal due to the rain. Consequently, authorities in districts bordering Nepal, particularly in the eastern regions, have been advised to remain vigilant.

Officials have been tasked with continuously monitoring river water levels and preparing flood relief teams.

Alertness of Relief and Rescue Teams

The Uttar Pradesh government has directed district officials to engage with affected families and assess the situation on-site. Services from fire departments, PAC, civil defense, home guards, and disaster management teams are to be utilized as needed.

The administration has also been instructed to arrange for drainage in flooded areas and ensure the safety of families living in weak structures.

Hope for Weather Improvement

The relief commissioner’s office has indicated a possibility of weather improvement in the coming days, but has also advised the administration to remain alert and adhere to weather-related warnings.
