Heavy Rainfall Causes Fatal Incident in Rajgarh

Bhopal/Rajgarh, Aug 10: Intense rainfall affected various regions of Madhya Pradesh on Monday, resulting in the tragic death of five individuals in Rajgarh. A van was swept away into a swollen drain, causing the fatalities, while waterlogging and flooded roads severely disrupted daily life throughout the state.

The incident took place in Padana town along the Pachore-Sarangpur road in Rajgarh district. The van, which was transporting 11 people, was carried into the Jhiri drain after the driver inadvertently drove onto an under-construction bridge that was submerged, according to police reports.

The group was en route from Satwas in Dewas district to Kadlavad village, comprising three men, four women, and four children.

"Three individuals managed to escape. Currently, five bodies have been retrieved, but their identities are yet to be confirmed," stated a police officer.

Initial reports suggest that the driver did not see the incomplete bridge due to the rainwater covering it. The vehicle was swept approximately 20 feet into the drain. A rescue operation, led by SDM Rohit Bamhore and SDOP Arvind Singh, continued into the evening.

In a separate rescue operation in Rajgarh on Sunday, police and NDRF teams helped evacuate saints and devotees trapped at Jal Mandir in Khilchipur due to a sudden increase in the Gadganga River's water level.

The heavy rainfall also impacted the state capital, with Bhopal receiving around seven inches of rain in the past 24 hours, leading to significant waterlogging and traffic disruptions. Schools were closed as a precautionary measure.

Minister Vishvas Sarang visited the affected areas, instructing officials to implement relief measures and clear drainage systems.

Traffic on the Bhopal-Bairasia road was halted as water overflowed the Itkhedi bridge, while swollen rivers hindered movement in the Bairasia region.

Other districts reported flooding as well. In Mandla, the Chhota Pul remained submerged despite a decrease in the Narmada's water level.

Water infiltrated homes, shops, and government buildings in Shajapur, Vidisha, Akodia, Salsalai, and Raisen.

As rivers and streams continued to rise, authorities remained engaged in rescue and relief efforts across the affected districts.

While the rain caused significant disruptions to daily activities and transportation, farmers noted that the precipitation would be beneficial for their standing crops.
