Severe Rainfall Hits Mumbai, Causes Traffic Disruptions

Mumbai was hit by severe rainfall on Tuesday evening, causing significant disruptions in traffic and rail services. Areas like Powai and Andheri faced severe waterlogging, prompting the IMD to issue weather alerts for the region. With predictions of more rain in the coming days, residents are advised to stay cautious. The situation has led to social media reactions highlighting the challenges faced by commuters. Read on for a detailed overview of the weather conditions and their impact on the city.

Heavy Rainfall and Storms in Mumbai

On Tuesday evening, several areas in Mumbai experienced intense rainfall, accompanied by strong winds and lightning. Regions such as Thane, Jogeshwari, Andheri, Powai, and Bhandup received significant rainfall, providing relief from the sweltering heat. However, reports of waterlogging in the Andheri subway led to traffic congestion. Similar conditions were observed in Lower Parel following the sudden downpour across various parts of Maharashtra.

IMD Forecasts More Rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted additional rainfall in Mumbai and its surrounding areas over the next few days, issuing multiple weather alerts for several districts in Maharashtra. A yellow alert has been announced for Mumbai, while an orange alert has been issued for various other districts.

Traffic Halted Due to Heavy Rain

The heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding have completely halted traffic in areas like Powai. An incident involving a fallen tree near the Climate Complex caused chaos, prompting authorities to advise travelers to take alternative routes. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries from the fallen tree. The Andheri subway was entirely submerged due to the torrential rain, leading the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to deploy drainage machines to remove the water.

Rail Services Disrupted on Konkan Railway

Rail services on the Konkan Railway route were temporarily disrupted due to heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding, particularly between the Veravali and Vilavade stations in Ratnagiri district, following a landslide. The railway reported that large boulders fell onto the tracks around 6:30 PM, affecting the busy 741-kilometer route connecting Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka.

Weather Forecast for Maharashtra

According to updates from the weather office, a cyclonic circulation is expected to form over the east-central Arabian Sea, which could lead to thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in Maharashtra between May 21 and 24. The regional meteorological center in Mumbai indicated that a low-pressure area might develop around May 22, potentially intensifying and moving northward.
