Severe Rainfall Disrupts Mumbai's Daily Life and Traffic
Impact of Heavy Rainfall in Mumbai
Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, experienced torrential rain overnight, significantly slowing down the operations of the bustling economic hub. Due to severe waterlogging, the Andheri subway was temporarily closed for traffic. Meanwhile, a tragic incident occurred in the suburb of Chembur, exacerbated by the heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Traffic Disruptions and Public Life Affected
The relentless downpour has disrupted daily life, with residents reporting traffic delays on social media platforms. Police were deployed to redirect traffic and prevent accidents in affected areas. Following the heavy rains, water accumulated again in the Andheri subway on Monday and Tuesday. Although the water levels had receded during the day, the subsequent night rain caused a resurgence, necessitating the closure of this crucial east-west route once more.
Reports of Waterlogging and Traffic Issues
The monsoon rains have made a significant impact across Mumbai and various parts of Maharashtra, leading to widespread chaos and traffic interruptions, along with a tragic event in the suburbs. Numerous incidents of fallen trees were reported in the western suburbs, severely obstructing main roads. A tree fell near the DN Nagar metro station, damaging a bus and crushing nearby objects, which halted local traffic.
On the Eastern Freeway, poor visibility and slippery roads resulted in a collision between two vehicles on Tuesday morning. Additionally, a large tree fell on SV Road in Andheri. Fire brigade vehicles and municipal workers with tree-cutting equipment were dispatched to clear the obstructions. Images showed low visibility and slow-moving traffic as heavy rain continued in Mumbai. Reports of the vehicle collision on the freeway added to the delays, with further details on injuries awaited.
School and College Operations Amid Rain
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and district administration have not issued any notifications regarding the closure of educational institutions due to the heavy rainfall. However, parents and students are advised to check with their respective schools for updates on closures.
Fatal Incident Involving a School Bus
In a tragic event, a large tree fell on a school bus in Chembur, resulting in the death of an 11-year-old student and injuring several others, as the heavy rain and strong winds wreaked havoc in the economic capital. This fatal incident occurred on Road Number 11 in Chembur when a strong gust uprooted a tree that fell directly onto the bus carrying students from Universal High School and Tilak Nagar School.
Many passengers were trapped inside the bus due to the collision. Local residents and the bus conductor quickly rushed to assist in rescuing the children, while emergency response teams utilized specialized cutting tools to remove debris and free those trapped. One student succumbed to severe injuries, while others were transported to Zen Hospital and Jain Hospital for emergency treatment.
Weather Warnings and Alerts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that relief from the heavy rainfall is unlikely in the near future, raising the warning level for the area: an 'Orange Alert' for the Konkan region due to persistent heavy to very heavy rainfall along the coast; an 'Orange Alert' for Pune district (ghats) due to intense rainfall on hilly routes and the risk of minor landslides; and a 'Yellow Alert' for Pune city due to ongoing light to moderate rainfall.
Continued Disruptions from Monsoon Rain
