Severe Rainfall Causes Traffic Chaos in Delhi-NCR

Delhi-NCR faced severe disruptions on Friday due to heavy rainfall and storms, causing significant traffic jams and waterlogging in various areas. Key routes like Kalindi Kunj and the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway were heavily congested, with reports of delays and fallen trees. The India Meteorological Department has issued alerts indicating that this stormy weather may continue, advising residents to stay indoors. While the rain offers temporary relief from the heat, rising temperatures are expected soon. Read on for more details about the ongoing weather conditions and their impact on daily life in the region.

Heavy Rain and Storms Disrupt Delhi-NCR

New Delhi: On Friday, the Delhi-NCR region experienced intense rainfall, leading to significant disruptions for residents. The storm caused severe traffic congestion in various areas, including Kalindi Kunj, DND, Mahamaya Flyover, the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, and from Delhi Cantonment to Rajouri Garden. Many localities faced waterlogging due to the heavy downpour.

It is noteworthy that the heavy rain and storm have resulted in a major traffic jam on the crucial link between Noida and Delhi at Kalindi Kunj. A traveler shared on social media that people were stuck in a massive traffic jam, and there were no traffic personnel present at the junction near the red light area. In response, the Delhi Traffic Police informed that the traffic inspector at Sarita Vihar Circle had been notified. Passengers reported delays of 30 to 40 minutes between Delhi Cantonment Metro Station and Rajouri Garden.

Stormy Weather Expected to Continue
According to reports, a strong storm is moving from west to east across Delhi and surrounding areas. There have been reports of fallen trees and huts in several locations. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated through its latest tracking that radar is showing a strong convective core (yellow/red zone), suggesting the likelihood of light rain, storms, and lightning. This activity is ongoing, and the IMD has warned that rain may continue for several hours. Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid open areas.

A western disturbance is currently passing over the northern mountains of India, while a cyclonic circulation is forming around central Pakistan, northern Rajasthan, and southern Punjab. This circulation is creating an east-west trough line extending from Haryana and Delhi to southwest Uttar Pradesh. As a result of these combined effects, some areas in Jammu and Kashmir have experienced rainfall, while light rain has occurred in the plains. The entire region is under a thick cloud cover, with the possibility of rain and thunderstorms in Punjab, Haryana, and northern Rajasthan.

Temporary Relief from Heat in Delhi
Currently, Delhi is experiencing rainfall. However, the respite from the intense heat may be short-lived. The situation in Delhi could be described as 'touch and go,' meaning that while storms and rain are occurring now, a gradual increase in temperature is expected as surface winds weaken. It is reported that the temperature in Delhi on Friday was slightly below 40°C. There is a possibility of slight relief over the weekend, but the weather department forecasts no rain from April 18 to 22, 2026.
