Severe Rain Disrupts Life in Mumbai and Coastal Maharashtra

Recent heavy rainfall in Mumbai and coastal Maharashtra has caused significant disruptions, leading to school closures and severe traffic issues. Local authorities have taken precautionary measures, while the India Meteorological Department has issued alerts for continued adverse weather. With reports of record rainfall in certain areas and the impact on public transport, residents are advised to stay safe and avoid flooded zones. Discover more about the situation and the expected weather conditions in the full article.

Heavy Rainfall Causes Major Disruptions

The recent torrential rains in the coastal regions of Maharashtra and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) have severely impacted daily life. In response to the intense downpour and subsequent waterlogging, local authorities have implemented precautionary measures. Municipalities in Panvel, Uran, Palghar, and Raigad announced closures of all schools and colleges on Thursday. According to administrative officials, classes will resume only after the waterlogging situation normalizes and the water recedes.

Schools Remain Open in Mumbai and Thane

While schools in the suburbs and neighboring districts were closed, institutions under the jurisdiction of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC), and Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) remained operational. These municipal bodies did not issue any official orders to close schools, although attendance was notably lower than usual.

Traffic Chaos and Service Disruptions

The heavy rainfall has led to a complete breakdown of traffic systems in Mumbai and its satellite cities. Major routes in Worli, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Jogeshwari, Mumbra, and Navi Mumbai were inundated with knee-deep water, halting vehicle movement.

Local train services, often referred to as Mumbai's lifeline, were also affected. A broken overhead wire on the Harbor Line caused significant delays, inconveniencing commuters traveling to and from work.

Additionally, three flights heading to Mumbai had to divert due to low visibility and adverse weather conditions. However, they safely returned to Mumbai once the weather improved.

Record Rainfall in Santacruz and Vikroli

According to the monsoon report released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) at 6 PM, rainfall levels varied significantly across different parts of Mumbai. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded only 30 mm of rain at the Colaba observatory between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM, while the Santacruz observatory reported a staggering 108 mm.

The areas with the highest rainfall from 8 AM to 7 PM included Vikroli (146.4 mm), Paspoli (142.8 mm), Bhandup (141.6 mm), and Santacruz (139.2 mm).

Double Trouble: High Tide and Waterlogging

The situation worsened on Thursday afternoon as high tide brought waves reaching 4.16 meters, coinciding with the heavy rainfall. This led to numerous complaints of waterlogging in low-lying areas such as Andheri, Santacruz, Khar, Bandra, Kurla, Vikroli, Powai, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, and Mulund. Despite the flooding, BEST buses and other public transport services continued to operate, albeit at a slower pace.

Weather Alert Issued

The IMD has issued an Orange/Red Alert for the next 24 hours, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds in Mumbai and its suburbs. Authorities have advised residents to stay away from waterlogged areas and only venture out in emergencies.
