Monsoon Fury in Maharashtra

The coastal and western regions of Maharashtra are currently experiencing intense monsoon conditions. Continuous heavy rainfall in Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Palghar has thrown daily life into disarray. In light of safety concerns for students, authorities announced a holiday for all government, private, and municipal schools and colleges in these districts on Monday, July 6.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a statement on Sunday evening, noting that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an 'Orange Alert' for Mumbai. This decision was made with student safety in mind. The IMD has also predicted strong winds along with heavy rainfall.


The statement further mentioned that government and private offices will operate as usual, urging residents to venture out only if necessary.


In recent days, Mumbai and its surrounding areas have faced torrential rain, leading to waterlogging on roads and incidents of fallen trees. Since June 30, three individuals, including a school student, have lost their lives due to these incidents. Officials confirmed that similar advisories have been issued for educational institutions in Pune, Thane, and Palghar.

Following the IMD's 'Red Alert' for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, the Pune district administration declared a holiday for all schools in the district on Monday. District Collector Jitendra Dudi provided this update.


Meanwhile, considering the IMD's warnings about heavy rainfall and prioritizing student safety, Mumbai University has postponed all exams scheduled for July 6. A circular from the university's examination and evaluation board stated that a revised exam schedule will be published soon on the university's official website.
