Kathmandu, September 29: Recent heavy rainfall in Nepal has resulted in the deaths of at least 27 individuals, as reported by officials on Monday.

According to the Nepal Home Ministry, four individuals are still unaccounted for, and eight others have sustained injuries due to the monsoon-related incidents that occurred between September 24 and 28.

The adverse weather has impacted 1,082 families, with 114 livestock reported dead. The authorities noted that there were 304 landslide events during this timeframe, leading to 20 fatalities, while four people remain missing and seven were injured.

Additionally, 87 incidents related to flooding were documented, resulting in four deaths, while three lives were lost and one person was injured due to 151 heavy rainfall-related occurrences, as per the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).

The torrential rains have caused the destruction of 227 homes and partially damaged 142 others, along with damaging 31 bridges. The NDRRMA attributed the heavy rainfall to a low-pressure system that developed over the Bay of Bengal.

On Sunday, a significant landslide occurred in the Manang district, sending debris into the Marsyangdi River and temporarily obstructing parts of it.

This landslide, triggered by continuous rains, led authorities to advise residents in downstream areas to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions. Although parts of the river were blocked for a few hours, it returned to normal without causing significant damage.

The nation is still recovering from devastating flash floods that occurred last month near the Nepal-Tibet border. The Bhotekoshi River, which flows south from the Himalayan region, carried floodwaters downstream, destroying homes, vehicles, roads, and bridges, and damaging hydropower projects.

The flash floods on August 26 resulted in at least 1,453 fatalities, with over 5,000 individuals reported missing. Nepal continues to experience frequent landslides due to heavy monsoon rains.

On Sunday, landslides also obstructed rivers in the Palpa, Manang, and Mustang districts in northern and western Nepal, although the impact was minimal as the rivers cleared after a few hours.

Moreover, an avalanche struck the base camp of the 7,126-meter Himlung Himal peak in the Nar Phu area of Manang district on Sunday, burying tents where support staff and mountain guides were sheltering, leaving 22 Nepalese individuals missing.
