Severe Flooding in Chhattisgarh Due to Heavy Rainfall

Impact of Heavy Rainfall in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, July 30 - Intense rainfall over the past few days has led to severe flooding in various regions of Chhattisgarh, submerging low-lying areas and causing rivers and streams to overflow. Authorities reported that several roads have been disrupted, creating flood-like conditions.

Officials indicated that the districts of Raipur, Bastar, and Durg have been the hardest hit by the rainfall. Many roads in these areas are inundated, prompting advisories for residents living near riverbanks.

In Garivabnd district, a 55-year-old man was swept away while attempting to cross the overflowing Sargi stream near Sahaspur village on Wednesday. His body was later recovered approximately five kilometers away near Khuteri village.

The continuous downpour has severely affected road connectivity in the district, with National Highway-130, which connects Raipur to neighboring Odisha, being closed due to flooding.

Additionally, routes such as Garivabnd-Mahasamund, Garivabnd-Nagari-Dhamtari, and Kochbay-Malgav-Kasanala have also been shut down. District Collector Bhagwan Singh Uike stated that the situation in Garivabnd remains critical due to ongoing rainfall.

He noted that 16 out of 21 gates of the Sikasar dam have been opened, releasing 44,000 cubic feet of water against an inflow of 58,000 cubic feet.

As a precaution, over 50 students from the government residential school in Pantora have been relocated to the safe village of Baruka. Residents in villages along the Pairi River have also been advised to remain vigilant.

Uike mentioned that approximately three feet of water has accumulated in the district hospital premises, and police along with district administration personnel have been deployed in sensitive areas.

In the neighboring Dhamtari district, the water level in reservoirs has risen due to heavy rainfall in catchment areas, prompting the opening of the gates of the Sondhur dam.

In Sarangard-Bilai district, the bodies of a couple who were swept away in their car while crossing a bridge over the Lat stream on July 26 were recovered on Wednesday. Their vehicle was found about 150 meters downstream near Chikhli village.

In another incident, the body of a 20-year-old man from Durg-Bhilai, who was swept away while on an outing with friends, was recovered from the Damau Dhara waterfall in Sakti district after a 24-hour rescue operation.

Continuous heavy rainfall in Bijapur district has caused rivers and streams to overflow, affecting traffic on several roads, including Bijapur-Bhairamgarh and Bijapur-Gangalur. Hundreds of villages in the district have lost connectivity with the district headquarters.

On Tuesday, a farmer lost his life due to a falling tree during heavy rains in the Gangalur area of Bijapur.

Authorities have advised residents to only leave their homes if absolutely necessary and to avoid crossing overflowing rivers, streams, and submerged bridges. An official from the Raipur Meteorological Center indicated that thunderstorms and lightning are expected in Sukma, Bijapur, Dantewada, Bastar, Narayanpur, and Kondagaon districts over the next 24 hours, with wind speeds reaching 40 to 60 kilometers per hour. Light to moderate rainfall is also anticipated in several areas, including Kanker, Dhamtari, Balod, Rajnandgaon, Garivabnd, Mahasamund, Raipur, Balodabazar, Janjgir-Champa, Raigarh, Bilaspur, Korba, Jashpur, Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi, Durg, Bemetara, Kabirdham, Surguja, Surajpur, Korea, and Balrampur.
