Severe Flooding in Assam Affects Thousands as Government Responds

The flood situation in Assam has escalated, impacting more than 48,000 residents across four districts. Dhemaji district is the worst hit, with significant damage reported. The ministers emphasized the need to restore normalcy and support the affected families during this challenging time. Guwahati, July 2: The flood situation in Assam worsened on Wednesday, impacting over 48,000 individuals across four districts. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has pledged that the central government will provide all necessary support for the relief and rehabilitation of those affected by the floods.


Chouhan, accompanied by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, visited various flood-stricken regions in Dhemaji district, where they assessed the situation alongside Assam ministers Keshab Mahanta, Pijush Hazarika, Sushanta Buragohain, and senior officials from the state government.


The ministers, along with Assam's Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Atul Bora, conducted an aerial survey of the most severely affected areas in Dhemaji, which borders the flood-impacted Arunachal Pradesh.


Chouhan remarked, “The crisis is significant, and we have witnessed the destruction. Homes have been damaged, and roads have been swept away. Our priority is to restore normalcy and help rebuild the lives of the affected.”


He noted that the delegation spoke with impacted families, evaluated the damage, and looked into the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts.


“Under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, the Central government is resolutely supporting the people of Assam during this difficult period and is dedicated to providing all possible assistance for relief, recovery, and reconstruction,” Chouhan added.


As per the latest flood report from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), approximately 48,500 individuals have been affected by the floods in the districts of Biswanath, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, and Nalbari.


Dhemaji is the hardest hit, with over 44,000 people affected, followed by Dibrugarh with around 4,000 individuals and Biswanath with nearly 500. As of Tuesday, nearly 47,000 people were still struggling with floodwaters in these four districts. Tragically, one fatality has been reported in this year's flooding.
